How to Win FREE HOPE Tickets

April 27th, 2006 emmanuel

If you see a flashing George W. Bush icon behind the HOPE logo on the main 2600 page that means you can win a pair of free HOPE tickets by figuring something out before anyone else does. What exactly does this mean? Well, we can’t tell you too much but since this is the first time we’ve done this, we’ll give you a couple of hints. It’s something from the brand new issue (Spring 2006) now in stores and subscriber hands. And no, it’s not the puzzle.

Oh, give us some credit. It’s not as easy as just posting here…

What does the issue have to do with the website? I see the bush icon and click on it, nothing special…

The silhouette image of GWB on page 29 of 2600 23:1 goes with the flashing image on the 2600 main page.

If you have the issue, you’ll be able to find the clue. You may need a magnifying glass… We’ve said too much.

  • 8. cipz  |  April 29th, 2006 at 6:23 pm

    447.925MHz

  • 9. l33tphreak  |  April 29th, 2006 at 9:33 pm

my mind jumps to the l33t5p34k google reference on the cover but what about it? maybe the ticker-tape too?

  • 10. l33tphreak  |  April 29th, 2006 at 9:48 pm

Perhaps the fact the ticker tape says

    FN30FQ-0,RON-0 UIv pid-F0 081020z[227]FIXED&

but whatever that means I’ve got no clue. It appears to be some kind of binary easter egg type code snippet. But still the google reference makes me curious and why is it in the format it is? The areas it’s pointing too maybe?

ok it’s far too late and I’m not making any more headway so heres what i figured:

keep in mind i knew nothing about amature radio two hours ago so it might all be wrong let me know.

the ticker tape on the cover of 23.1 is a repeating message that you have to piece together in all i get

    fm ke2uk-0 to APS227-0 ViaRS0ISS-3, fn30fq-0, ron-0 UIv pid=f0 081020z[227]FIXED&operational fsr 1200:

not having any idea what that is ViaRS0ISS-3 stuck out to me i searched it and found http://tinyurl.com/otbgq

    so I figure it’s a message “FIXED&operational fsr 1200:” from ke2uk to aps227 via the Kenwood D700.

well hams love there callsigns so I look up aps227 with no luck untill i figure out apsxxx means APRS+SA v2.27 at http://tinyurl.com/l65es

ahh so it’s location data so i figure the point of all this must be that “the price of” ke2uk’s “convienence is his identity” look up the sender and heres what i got:

    http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=KE2UK
    http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/msg.cgi?call=KE2UK
    http://www.qrz.com/detail/KE2UK
    http://www.qsl.net/ke2uk/

http://www.phrozen-neon.com/alarc/aprs.php is a cool little tool

so can anyone help me figure out how to get Xastir 1.7.1 http://n1ofz.connares.org/ to work? I’ve been trying for an hour now to get it to send him a message and i’m not sure what i’m doing wrong. at this point i’m about ready to email although i somehow feel that that might be cheating.

    any help would be great
    thanks

These are truly impressive efforts. But you’re looking on the wrong page.

  • 13. l33tphreak  |  April 30th, 2006 at 10:43 pm

Ok, now I’m lost. I do see the lovely flashing image but I’ve no idea how I’ve caused it. I was looking at the Enigma page (60) and examining the numbers off the NY lotto ticket when I decided to start checking out the source code. After examining images/masthead.gif and images/masthead2.jpg I decided that wasn’t it and sat to stare for a moment. Now I see what wasn’t there before….

Maybe it’s the “promotion” code on page 61:
    A 3-1-37

  • 15. theINFORMANT  |  May 2nd, 2006 at 12:38 am

  • 18. theINFORMANT  |  May 2nd, 2006 at 1:13 am

or gb on the license plate on page 11. but no magnifying glass required to see it

  • 19. theINFORMANT  |  May 2nd, 2006 at 1:17 am

[…] “I wouldn’t go so far as to say there is a secret message, but I would advise our listeners to look for one,” he said. He wouldn’t admit that the message had anything to do with the upcoming Hackers On Planet Earth conference. However, the 2600 homepage now shows a flashing Bush icon, which means that a HOPE-related contest is underway. […]
