Radio Station N6H at HOPE Number Six

July 15th, 2006 mlc

The FCC has granted radio station callsign N6H for a special event station at HOPE Number Six. Ham radio operators will operate station N6H from the 18th floor and demonstrate how wireless voice, data, and video contacts can be made to other amateur radio stations around the world over shortwave (HF), VHF, and UHF frequencies. A special HOPE Number Six QSL card will be issued to anyone who successfully contacts or
hears radio station N6H on the air.

This is pretty cool.. When can we see a list of frequencies and modes that we’ll be operating on?

    Frequencies, wattage, etc.?

We’re looking at 100W on HF for starters.
Frequencies have yet TBD but the common practice for Special Events is to operate about 30 kHz up from the bottom of the General Class portion for each band.

So listen for us there. Of course, propogation permitting, we’ll be on 10, 20, 40, 80m mostly.

Listen for us on sideband voice mostly, but I have been told there may be some CW operating as well.

I plan to put an Echolink node on the air as well, so watch for that.

Up-to-date information about the station will be kept on its wiki page:

I dont know too much about amatuer radio, but I am pretty interested in it. Hopefully someone at HOPE will be able to help me out a bit on listening in.

Us Tech class Hams are counting on the UHF, VHF operation… Might bring an H/T to HOPE..

  • 7. el_nerdo  |  July 17th, 2006 at 2:05 pm

Definitely bring an HT! There are always lots of hams at HOPE.

Ryan, just come by the station, and we’ll show you everything. As long as there’s a control operator there, you’ll be able to get on the air yourself, if you’d like.

ooh, shiny! Will hams that walk up be able to work HF? I’ve not been on in years. I will bring the HTs.

awesome. will be there with the 2m/440 HT (no time to upgrade to general, sadly.)

Did someone say CW ? From 1 to 20 WPM I can help

  • 12. el_nerdo  |  July 18th, 2006 at 1:23 pm

MysticPixel: there were ideas floating around about having a VE session at the conference… sadly, there just wasn’t enough time to get everything co-ordinated. The next conference there will be an exam session for anyone interested.

MysticPixel: Turns out we’re going to have a VE session after all! So if you think you want to upgrade, you’ll have the opportunity.

Shoots, boots! The conference starts tomorrow! Fortunately I may be able to invest in a inexpensive “shortwave” radio receiver at LONGS in Hilo today. Can I pick up these signals here in the jungle on the Big Island (Hawaii) without a large antennae?–I dunno’ yet.

I would love to learn that some smart hacker(s) recorded the whole event (or every major panel) in mp3 or similar format. I live for listening to the earlier HOPE conferences (H2K2, et al!). Please post those mp3s ASAP. I can download them on the fast servers at school (University of Hawaii at Hilo).

Please make sure that every speaker (audience members too) talks directly into the mike every time.

    Aloha!

el_nerdo: excellent, now to learn CW in the next 24 hours…

…unfortunately, the chances are slim. We’ll see though.

    See you at the con.

I’m sorry I missed the special event station. Will you be doing this again next year ? I have been an Amateur Radio Op. for 23 years now. I love your mag also. I hope to hear you next year. Thanks for all your efforts.
